What you'll need:

  • A glass pouring bowl for mixing the jelly

  1. Prepare the Jelly: Follow the instructions on the jelly packet and refrigerate until set.
  2. Layering: Once the jelly is firm, layer it in clear cups with gummy worms on top.
  3. Add Whipped Cream: Top with a dollop of whipped cream to resemble spooky ghosts.
  4. Chill and Serve: Keep the cups in the fridge until it’s time to serve!

3. Mummy Sausage Rolls

  • 400g puff pastry
  • 500g sausage meat (or boerewors with casing removed)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 50g mustard (optional)

What you'll need:

  • A large oven tray (if you’re using an oven)
  • An egg brush
  • A sharp knife
  • A small bowl for the egg wash
  • Cook and Spray for the tray

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C. If you’re using an air fryer, then preheat to 180°C.
  2. Roll Out Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry and cut into strips.
  3. Prepare Sausages: Place a line of sausage meat down the center of each pastry strip.
  4. Wrap and Seal: Wrap the pastry around the sausage, leaving gaps to resemble mummy bandages.
  5. Egg Wash: Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  6. Bake: Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with mustard and tomato sauce for dipping!

4. Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

  • 250g all-purpose flour
  • 200g sugar
  • 125g pumpkin purée (you can boil, or oven roast a pumpkin until soft and then mash it if you can’t find any of this purée in South Africa. Just be sure to reduce the cooking time by cutting the pumpkin up into small cubes. Alternatively, you can use pumpkin-flavoured baby purée).
  • 125ml vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 5g baking powder
  • 2g cinnamon
  • 2g nutmeg
  • 1g salt
  • 100g cream cheese (for icing)
  • 50g butter (for icing)
  • 150g icing sugar

What you'll need:

  • Piping bag
  • Piping nozzle
  • Glass cup
  • Cupcake tray
  • Cupcake patties/cases
  • X1 small and x1 medium bowl
  • Spray & cook for the patties/cases

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven or mini oven to 180°C and line a cupcake tray with cases.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a bowl, mix the pumpkin purée, oil, and eggs until smooth.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry mix to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Bake: Fill cupcake cases two-thirds full and bake for 20-25 minutes. Cool completely.
  6. Icing: Beat together cream cheese, butter, and icing sugar until smooth, then pipe this on the cooled cupcakes. You can place your piping bag into a glass cup and fold the outer edge over it to make it easier to fill your bag.

5. Blood-Red Velvet Crumpets

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • 100g sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 50ml red food coloring
  • 50g butter (for cooking)

What you'll need:

  • X1 large bowl
  • X1 medium bowl
  • Egg lift
  • X1 can whipped cream (optional)
  • Syrup (optional)
  • Cranberry sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, vanilla, and red food colouring.
  3. Combine Mixtures: Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  4. Cook Pancakes: Heat a non-stick pan with butter. Pour in batter for each crumpet and cook until bubbles form. Flip and cook until done.
  5. Serve: Stack the crumpets and drizzle with syrup or whipped cream for a deliciously festive breakfast! You can also use cranberry sauce, syrup or compôte and pour this over a stack of crumpets to look like blood - stick a chopping knife into the stack for a more dramatic look.
